I think that cheerleading should be considered an NCAA Varsity college sport just like football and basketball. Cheerleaders should be able to get scholarships and recognition as an athletic sports team. It is only fair that this change happens. Cheerleading squads compete against other squads and determine a winner just like other sports. They practice and train just like other athletes. As a cheerleader myself, I personally know how hard cheerleading really is. I have been cheerleading pretty much my whole life, so it is an insult when people make the comment that cheerleading is not a sport. Most of the time guys are the ones who make this comment because they just assume that all cheerleaders do is yell for the team. I guarantee they would have a completely different attitude if they went to just one cheerleading practice.
Personally, I want to see the sport I love so much to finally get the recognition it deserves. Officially changing cheerleading to an actual sport would not involve that much of an adaptation from the way things currently are. It would affect those who cheer or those within the cheerleading world, such as coaches and judges for competitions. It would also give cheerleaders everywhere a feeling of satisfaction that the sport they work so hard on is in rank with other sports. Because it would be an easy transition, I propose that the change should take place at the beginning of the next school year. This will allow time to prepare the rules and regulations necessary for a new NCAA sport. Allowing this change to take place would finally let everyone see how hard cheerleading really is. It would provide justice for this amazingly under thought of sport. After all, this country is about justice, right?
I really like the topic you chose, and I agree with your argument. You bring up very good points such as when you reference the dictionary's definition of a sport. However I disagree with the comment that "the only difference is, it does not involve a ball." This point doesn't strengthen your argument because there are other activities that do not include a ball that ARE recognized as NCAA Varsity Sports such as wrestling, swimming and diving, and gymnastics. Otherwise, I like this post and as a cheerleader myself, I would like to see cheerleading become a sport as well. (:
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you that cheerleading is a sport. It involves many skills that need years of training and it involves many physical techniques that gymnasts does. I know for sure I can never become a cheerleader because I don't have the ability to lol. I like how you used a definition of a sport to say that cheerleading fits in the definition. I think you supported your claim well except sometimes you use supports that don't really support or tie in with your claim like when you said "cheerleading isn't as hard as it seems" and "a cheerleader has to constantly keep the counts of a routine in her head, hit the right motions, say the right words, and keep the flyer from hitting the ground, all while smiling and showing spirit". These claims don't support that cheerleading is a sport.
ReplyDeleteI agree that cheerleading is a sport. It requires time, try-outs and the ability to perform the cheer moves and routines. I think one reason that the NCAA might not consider cheerleading a sport may be that if they consider cheerleading a NCAA sport then they have to consider other gymnastic/dance events NCAA sports as well. Breakdance teams would have to be included, stepping teams, and dance crews in general.
ReplyDeleteCourtney,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post and I can truly say that I feel cheerleaders being denied the title of a true athlete is unfair and something needs to be done. According to the dictionary definition of a sport, cheerleading fits this definition completely. However, if cheerleading is added as a NCAA Varsity sport, where does this change stop. Would you add gymnastics, dance team, and even breaking dancing (as the above comment mentions) to the list of varsity sports? As dancer of thirteen years, I would say that certain kinds of competitive dance are also sports for many of the same reasons that you consider cheerleading a sport. However, should these activities really being added as a NCAA Varsity sport. When a fan of sports thinks about a cheerleader, they normally would think football or basketball games and not necessarily the fun of going to a cheerleading competition. While I do agree both cheerleading and dance are extremely difficult activities to master and both take many many years to perfect, I would almost argue that they are art forms rather than sports. Cheerleading and dance are meant to be graceful and high energy as to entertain a crowd. One main purpose of a cheerleading routine is to excite the spectators that are watching. This is not necessarily the point of a sport like football or basketball. While many people attend for entertainment purposes, the winning team doesn't win based on the excitement in the crowd. The general idea of cheerleading is just that, cheering for a sports team and having school spirit. I do not agree that cheerleading should be added as an NCAA Varsity sport.
Really interesting choice of topic. I know tons of cheerleaders from my highschool and they're tough girls and they give their lives to cheerleading. People love to watch cheerleading, given the chance, it'd be interesting to see it in the NCAA.
